        Congrès de l'Association européenne d'Urologie, à Vienne.

      The
5th Congress of the European Association of Urology took place in Vienna
from May 12 - 15, 1982. On this occasion the Austrian Postal and Telecommunications
Administration issued the present stamp showing a "urine inspection".
It is a reproduction from a manuscript kept at the library of the University
of Bologna. This manuscript is a magnificent codex of Avicenna, the "Canon
medicinae" in Hebrew, created in Salerno in the 15th century. The
stamp only shows a detail from the upper third of a highly elaborate page.
Urine inspections were a popular subject of book illustrations in the
Middle Ages. This is probably not only due to the fact that it was the
second most important diagnostic measure (after pulse taking), but also
because it offered the artists the opportunity to prove their skills in
depicting action. The stamp shows a doctor holding a urinal glass for
a sample in his left hand.
